We spent our first night in Nevada back in an area that Russ knows very well – Hoover Dam! For those of you who may not know, Russ was a federal law enforcement officer there for many years. A lot has changed there, what was once a simple road from Boulder City, now lies an intricate network of roadways.
Before passing by the Dam, we stopped and had a nice lunch at Willow Beach Marina. You can’t see it from the main road, but it is well worth the visit. We watched the ducks dive under water, fish swimming in the crystal clear waters of the Colorado River and listened to the birds singing as we sat at the picnic table eating our lunch (which included the cranberry pear olive oil we got at Desert Diamond Distillery in Kingman, AZ). After lunch, Russ actually took a quick swim in the 53 degree water (not even joking….).
Then we made our way to the Hoover Dam Lodge Casino/Hotel. They allow RVs to park overnight in their lot, so we stayed there (along with about 8 other rigs).
The area where the RVs park is right in between two large rock outcroppings. We thought we were lucky to score such an amazing view – and we were, but the night’s weather was incredibly windy. There were gusts around 40mph coming through that area and we’d be lying if we didn’t say we got a bit worried a few times!! There is a helicopter pad where tours depart throughout the day but otherwise it’s a pretty quiet location and there is also an entrypoint to a walking path through the canyon nearby.
Check in tomorrow to see what trouble we get into in Vegas
