One of the things I love about the way we are able to travel is the ability to alter plans. The original route I was thinking we would take is still the most direct route, but after checking the weather for the next couple of days in that area, I noticed colder temps and snow. But…..if we went a slightly longer route, the elevations and temps were much more favorable.
Along the route we took, we found an abandoned town that died out in the early 1990’s. It was pretty neat walking around these ruins….how old does an area need to be abandoned before it’s considered a ghost town???
Now we are also traveling in remote areas where there is often 100 miles between gas stations, and forget having a Walmart or Cracker Barrel to boondock!! The best resource in areas like this for camping is the Campendium app. I saw 4 potential BLM sites with the area we wanted to be in tonight and let me tell you – we scored. BIG TIME!
We are at Sportsman’s Beach on Walker Lake in NV. Most people think of BLM sites as free and just open land. Not true! We have a nice, level spot with a fire ring, picnic table and trash bins for $6/night. When we first arrived, we were the only ones but there are now 3 other campers here.
Russ pulled out the metal detector and has plans to go back out tomorrow. I’ll post a pic of his finds tomorrow-so far he’s got a few cool items!
