The popularity of RV travel and vacationing has exploded! Tens of thousands of Americans have buckled up to hit the roads (many in their new RVs) in search of excitement, adventure and in some cases treasure! Today we’ll help you find that treasure with our list of 5 best metal detectors for beginners of all ages and price points.

As you travel, remember the phrase “its about the journey, not the destination”. I take my metal detector with me everywhere and look for places to treasure hunt along the way. It’s actually one of the reasons we RV full-time! These places can be city or county parks, beaches, old abandoned schoolhouses, ghost towns or even places with historical significance (be sure to follow all local laws and regulations). Throughout my travels I’ve found silver coins, gold rings, artifacts and even gold nuggets!

Metal detecting is a great way to break up the monotony of a long drive can be really beneficial for stretching those cramped leg muscles out and get the blood flowing again. If your kids or grandkids are traveling with you it can be a great way to teach them about history with all the old objects, you’ll uncover and then look up later!

What is the best metal detector for a beginner?

That is a question I am asked a lot. There are many metal detectors out there to choose from. I’ve listed a few of my favorites for beginners below (yes, I’ve owned and used every one of them). This list will cover a wide range of ages, needs and most budgets. Listed in no particular order:

“Only last weekend, my necklace broke while I was out clearing a raw lot in Okeechobee and I lost a diamond pendant that belonged to my great grandma. I searched for hours and hours, but couldn’t find it anywhere. I was absolutely sick over it and decided to order this metal detector to help me try and find it. Honestly, I thought it was gone forever, but after searching for only two hours (on the recommended jewelry settings in the manual), I found my pendant under a pile of leaves and twigs. Teknetics Delta 4000

The Teknetics Delta 4000 metal detector is probably the most underrated metal detector in the entire Teknetics lineup. It’s Teknetics entry level metal detector but boy-oh-boy does it come loaded with features. The Teknetics Delta 4000 has adjustable discrimination to eliminate unwated targets, pinpoint mode to locate the exact location of buried objects, 3-tone audio gives you different tones for different types of metal, adjustable sensitivity and a running depth indicator tells you how deep the target is, along with target ID numbers and categories that tell you what the buried object is! “After doing a bunch of research, I purchased this for my hubby’s bday. My hubby always thinks he needs to have the best of the best (or whatever has the biggest brand name), so when he got this for his birthday he was a little disappointed because it didn’t have the Garrett name on it. But after doing research himself, he found out that this is actually BETTER than the Garrett AT Pro. He can’t believe how easy it is to use – how much better results you get from the Teknetics Delta 4000. He absolutely would recommend this metal detector.” – Hannah

Finding Sapphires in Montana

What would you do if you found a sapphire that is worth $80,000? One was recently found at Gem Mountain Sapphire Mine. That’s all we needed to hear to head there and try our luck!

If you plan a visit to Montana, make sure you make the trip to Philipsburg. There, down a dirt road and over a one-lane bridge, you will find the Gem Mountain Sapphire Mine. Billed as Montana’s oldest and largest sapphire mine, it is a must-stop if you are in the area.

Sapphire Gravel

To buy a bucket of what they call “sapphire gravel” head into the main building and pay at the register. Discounts are given if purchasing several buckets at a time.

Go back outside to the tables and the staff at Gem Mountain will provide all the tools necessary for you to find your treasure. Staff will also be on-hand and walk around providing detailed instructions on how to sift and what to look for.

Assessing your finds

Once you have sifted through your bucket(s), you can take them back into the main building. There they will separate your sapphires into cuttables, flawed-cuttables and fun-to-find.

  • Cuttables – gems that are able to to be cut/faceted/heat treated
  • Flawed-cuttables – gems that are large enough to be cut/faceted/heat treated, but display obvious flaws
  • Fun-to-find – gems too small to cut/facet

The $80,000 find!

On our visit, staff shared with us a recent letter from one of their visitors who had sent in one of their bucket-finds for cutting/faceting & heat treatment. This process takes an underdeveloped stone and transforms it. We were told you never know exactly how it will turn out. When their stone was returned they had it appraised and were shocked to find out that it was valued at more than $80,000!!! Not so much because of the size of the stone, but more because of the color. Are you ready to go to Gem Mountain and see what you will find?

Most of the gems you will find during initial sifting at Gem Mountain will have a sea-glass green color to them. There are some that come out with deeper colors (such as a cobalt blue) but the majority are the lighter green. We selected three from our finds to undergo the treatment processing and now need to wait about 10 months to find out what we have!

Bonus: Free Camping

There is a free camping area on location at Gem Mountain for customers. The campground consists of about 6-8 spots and there aren’t any hookups, but you will find a picnic table and a fire ring. If all spots are taken and you still wish to remain overnight, you may do so in the main parking lot area. No reservations are required and it is first come, first served.

If you are looking for peace and quiet this is the place. As this is a remote location, don’t expect to pick up any cellular or internet services.
